‘No to Tory U-Turn on third runway at Heathrow’ petition presented at Treasury

April 25, 2012 4:50 PM

• [Apr 25] LOCAL Lib Dems have been inundated with support for their campaign against a third runway at Heathrow following recent reports in the national press that George Osborne has persuaded David Cameron to put a third runway "back on the table".

Jane Dodds, Lib Dem candidate in the North Richmond by-election, wrote to local residents on the issue two weeks ago and many hundreds of residents have sent back pledges of support for her campaign. This morning, she and Liberal Democrat Group Leader Stephen Knight presented the petition outside the Treasury in an attempt to show George Osborne the strength of feeling in Richmond on this issue.

Jane Dodds, Lib Dem candidate in the North Richmond by-election, said: "I am delighted that so many local people have backed our campaign in such a short space of time. It is time that the Conservative party took the views of Richmond residents seriously. The third runway was pushed off the agenda two years ago and that's where it belongs."

Liberal Democrat Group Leader Stephen Knight said: "There are clearly discussions going on at the top of the Conservative Party that include options to expand Heathrow. As well as reports of discussions around a third runway, we know that the government is trialing so-called 'mixed mode' operation of the existing runways and is about to consult on changing the current restrictions on night flights, with one major airline pressing for flights up to 1am and starting again at 4am in the morning. By electing Jane on 3rd May, local people can use the by-election to send a strong message to David Cameron and George Osborne that Richmond residents are against any further expansion of Heathrow."
