Campaigning for London in Parliament, in Europe and in the London Assembly

No Recourse, No Escape

12.00.00am GMT Tue 9th Mar 2010

Local MP Tom Brake is calling on his fellow MPs of all political colours to show their support for International Women's Day by signing an Early Day Motion (EDM) 214.

The EDM seeks to promote a repeal of the 'no recourse to public funds' rule. This rule traps hundreds of women in the UK in a cycle of abuse, unable to access basic levels of protection and support because of their immigration status.

"Women fleeing domestic violence should not be punished for their bravery and sacrifice," said Tom.

"With International Women's Day earlier this week, these issues are in the public consciousness, and I would like to see my colleagues sign up to this initiative."

March 8th was designated as International Women's Day by the U.N. in 1975. It originally set out to raise awareness of the fight for better pay for women, voting rights and an end to discrimination.

Today, in celebrating the achievements of great and ordinary women, it hopes to inspire future generations to their example.
